Format and current race calendar

Who can take part

The Fell Championship is open to:

First-claim members
Second-claim members
FRA-based members

To qualify for championship points you must register to run as Sinfin Running Club on the day and wear a club vest or training top in the race.

Social members are very welcome to run, but are not eligible to score championship points.

How the championship works

The championship system rewards:

How well you perform in races
How many races you complete

It also takes into account:

Age
Gender
How difficult each race is
The number of races you complete

This means everyone has a fair chance to do well.

Each year, specific races are chosen for the championship. This encourages members to attend the same events, travel together, and gives Sinfin a strong presence on the fell scene in Derbyshire.

Trophies and awards

Runners compete for the Graham Young Trophy, introduced in 2022. It is presented to the overall winner each year at the club’s annual awards night. The trophy recognises Graham as the pioneer of the club’s fell running tradition.

The top stone of the trophy comes from the Middle Peak Quarry in Wirksworth, in the White Peak.
The base was hand-made by Duncan at Dual Design in Derby.

The best placed runner of the opposite sex to the overall winner receives the Sinfin Fell Shield.

Awards are also given for:

Second and third place for men
Second and third place for women

Other notable achievements are also recognised, including any member who completes 10 races in the year.

Fell Championship race calendar

The Fell Championship runs from January to December each year.
There are 26 named races in the calendar (see diary below).
Your final score is based on your best 10 results from these 26 races.
You can also earn commitment bonus points by taking part in up to 6 extra races beyond your best 10.
Everyone starts the year with the same number of points. After each race, points are deducted from your total based on your result.
At the end of the year, the runner with the lowest number of points is the winner.

How your points change

Points totals change quickly during your first 10 races. After that, they stay more stable.

If you are behind on points and have run fewer than 10 races, please do not worry – you still have a good chance to close the gap by doing more events.

2025 Fell Championship – review and final positions

In 2025, participation in the Fell Championship was very close to last year’s record:

Nearly 400 championship race finishes
54 different members taking part in championship races
An average of 15 members at each of the 26 races

In total, 62 members took part in some form of fell racing during the year, which is great to see.

Highlights include:

A highest turnout of 30 members at Belper Parks Life
16 members reaching the 10-race milestone
A record 11 members going on to complete their “Big 16” (16 races in the season), which shows strong support for the club’s fell racing format

The calendar again took us to a wide range of locations, from nearby Little Eaton Bank to Ingleton in Yorkshire for the annual weekender, and to Dinas Mawddwy in Wales for the British Fell Relays.
